Summer Meeting -- September 18, St. Mary of the Springs

We will meet on Sunday, September 18, at 2:00 p.m. in the Martin de Porres Center at St. Mary of the Springs. Sister Ruth Caspaar will share with us the story of the writing and editing of the new history of her congregation, as well as selected historical high points from its first 140 years. Sister Ruth was editor of A Place of Springs: A History of the Dominican Sisters of Saint Mary of the Springs: 1830-1970 by Camilla Mullay O.P., which was published in June, 2005, as part of the Congregation's 175th Anniversary Celebration. After the untimely death of Sr. Camilla Mullay in 2003, just as her work was nearing completion, the Leadership Team of the Columbus Dominicans asked Sr. Ruth to edit the book and bring it to publication for the 2005 celebration.

Ruth Caspar O.P., a member of the Dominican sisters of St. Mary of the Springs, retired in 2003 after 35 years on the Faculty of Philosophy at Ohio Dominican College (now University). She holds a doctorate in philosophy from the Univesity of Notre Dame, has done extensive post-graduate work in biomedical ethics, and served as a consultant in biomedical ethics at area hospitals.

There will be refreshments after Sr. Ruth's presentation and the Society will hold its regular quarterly business meeting.

To reach the Martin de Porres Center, enter the St. Mary's grounds at the stone gateway at Leonard Avenue and Sunbury Road. Proceed up to the left past the new residence building, continuing past Mohun Hall to parking Lot B. Push the button and tell the attendant you are parking for the meeting in de Porres Center. You will see the glass-enclosed entrance to the de Porres Center on the right between the residence building and Mohun Hall. Take the elevaor or stairs down to the meeting rooms.

Bulletin Editor

If our Bulletin is to continue, we must have a new editor, someone not to write stories but to be in charge of preparation each month, beginning in 2006. If you have any suggestions or are able to volunteer for this position, contact Chairman Pat Mooney (614-279-6665) or Don Schlegel (614-771-9090).

Fenwick Papers

Congratulations are in order for Father Luke Tancrell, O.P., a member of the Society, who has completed the monumental task of editing the papers of Rt. Rev. Edward D. Fenwick, first Bishop of Cincinnati. The papers have been published in book form as Edward Dominic Fenwick Papers 1803-1832, Founding American Dominican Friar and Bishop. The book contains 428 pages, an index, over a hundred fascinating illustrations, commentary on Father Fenwick, the times, and the papers, and notes to the 218 Fenwick papers.

Society member Ann Hansen assisted with this project. Ann, who holds a B. Litt. (Oxon.) and has held one of the Oxford places at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London, from persevered in correcting Father Luke's efforts and gave encouragement when the project seemed mired in difficulties. From first to last she examined every page of the manuscript.

While this book is not one for the casual reader, every researcher of the period will want access to a copy. Copies can be ordered for $60 plus $6 postage and handling from: Dominicana Publications, Third Order of Saint Dominic, 487 Michigan Avenue NE, Washington DC 20017-1585.
