Winter Meeting -- February 18

Our Annual Luncheon and Winter Quarterly Meeting will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2005. We will gather at 11:30 and be seated for luncheon at 12 noon in the Victorian Room at Westminster Thurber Community, 645 Neil Avenue in Columbus. Directions: Take Collins Avenue west from Neil Avenue and continue bearing left to the Westminster Thurber entrance. Enter at the 'church steeple' in in the single-story section. The luncheon menu will be: mixed greens salad with choice of dressing, pork chop with maple-cranberry sauce, dilled carrots and parsleyed redskins, rolls and butter, beverages, and cheesecake. Cost of the luncheon is $18 per person and reservations are required. Please send the form below with your check by February 12.

The day's speaker will be Richard Shiels, Ph.D. and Associate Professor of History at the OSU Newark campus. He will speak on "The Newark Earthworks: A Sacred Site in Our Own Backyard." The earthworks are recognized as one of the "seventy wonders of the ancient world." The area may have been a place of pilgrimage for ancient peoples from hundreds of miles away, two thousand years ago, with the entire Raccoon valley a sacred landscape. Dr. Shiels will explore that scenario and its implications for twenty-first century Americans. Dr. Shiels specializes in American religious history and is the author of many articles on that topic. He has received the OSU/Newark Teaching Excellence Award three times.

A short business meeting will follow. For further information contact Pat Mooney at 614-225-0130 or pmooney@columbus.rr.com.

New on the Website

Our website now includes an updated reading of the cemetery at the former St. Joseph Church, Jersey Township, Licking County as well as an updated translation of the German baptismal records of St. Nicholas Church in Zanesville from the 1840s. Both items were defective to different degrees as originally published in our Bulletin.

Membership

It gives us great sorrow to report that Don Snider, one of our earliest members, has gone to his final reward. He died at the age of 79 on December 27. We will have a Mass offered for him. May he and all of our deceased members rest in peace.

Society dues remain $15 per calendar year for one person (or two persons at the same address), $25 per institutional subscription. As of December 20, seventy-four are on the roster for 2005. Those enrolled since the last newsletter are:
