Fall Meeting -- November 19

Our Fall quarterly meeting will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 19, in the St. Maximilian Kolbe Room, on the second floor of St. Patrick's Parish Hall, North Grant and Mt. Vernon Avenues, Columbus.

Dr. Tony Lisska will present "Overshadowed by John Ireland: Langdon Thomas Grace, Mid-west Dominican, Bishop of St. Paul." This is the last of Dr. Lisska's series of sketches of "unknown Buckeyes."  He has put the series together in response to a claim by his erstwhile Denison colleague, William Utter, who wrote in his volume of the 1940s History of the State of Ohio that, while there were Roman Catholics in Somerset, nothing significant happened there. This claim demanded attention and Dr. Lisska has responded with the stories of the Bishops who came out of Somerset.

Bishop Grace is an interesting individual whose sense of mission and drive served the emerging Church well both in Western Tennessee and in Minnesota.  He was the mentor of Archbishop John Ireland, one of the most celebrated American churchman at the beginning of the 20th century.  Very little has been written about Bishop Grace who, as a freshly ordained cleric just returned from his European education, had traveled the trails around Somerset.

Tony is well known to our members, having been a member, speaker, and contributor to our Bulletin for many years.  He a Columbus native and is Professor of Philosophy at Denison University in Granville.

A short business meeting will follow the talk and refreshments, at which a committee will be appointed to nominate officers for the 2007-2008 term.
