Our Annual Luncheon and Winter Quarterly Meeting will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2007.  The day's speaker will be Jared Wicks, S.J., who will tell us of "Professor Ratzinger at Vatican II: A Chapter in the Life of Pope Benedict XVI.”

Fr. Jared Wicks, S.J., grew up in Holy Name Parish and attended St. Charles Preparatory School.  He has been a Jesuit since 1949. He did graduate study in theology in Germany to prepare himself for teaching at the Jesuit School of Theology in Chicago.  He was called to Rome in 1979 to teach at the Gregorian University, where he directed several dissertations on the genesis of documents of Vatican II.  Fr. Wicks moved in 2004 to John Carroll University in Cleveland, where he continues scholarly work and publication on ecumenical topics and on Vatican II.  His current research focuses on the theologian "experts" at the Council, among whom Professor Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, was an active contributor, for example, in circulating alternative texts, in advising bishops, in drafting their written and oral interventions, and in helping prepare portions of the documents eventually issued by the Council.

We will gather at Westminster Thurber Community, 645 Neil Avenue in Columbus at 11:30 (with crackers, crudités, 'punch lite') and be seated for luncheon at 12 noon in the Victorian Room.  Directions: Take Collins Avenue west from Neil Avenue and continue bearing left to the Westminster Thurber gate. Enter at the 'steeple' in in the single-story section.  The luncheon menu will be: green salad, rolls, butter; chicken cordon bleu, root vegetable medley, green beans;  pie a la mode; coffee, tea, lemonade.  Cost of the luncheon is $20 per person and reservations are required.  Please send the form below with your check by February 12.A short business meeting will follow, with the election of officers for the 2007-2008 term.  For further information contact Pat Mooney at 614-225-0130 or pmooney@columbus.rr.com.

History of Our Lady of Victory Through the Years:
A new parish history of 225 pages with the above title was written by Katie Foley and published in 2006.  It is quite a lively history, enjoyable to read, including many reminiscences of parishioners and former pastors, as well as facts from numerous informative accounts from the diocesan newspaper and parish records.  It is a complete history, "warts and all," but happily there are not many warts to be reported!  Broader perspectives, such as the development of the diocesan high schools and the efforts of Bishop Ready to upgrade the social work of the diocese, are not neglected.  Notable features include a short chapter on St. Raphael's Home for the Aged and appendices listing the Sisters of Charity who taught at the school as well as a complete list of graduates of the parish high school.  This book demonstrates, in a heartwarming way, the good done by the Church and Her people through 85 years, despite human frailties.

Contributors of some individual chapters include Mary Waterfield, Beth Simmonds, Jane Leach, Emilie Miller, Margaret Mooney, Elaine Casey DiSalvo.  Some 44 photographs are included.

Available from the parish office, 1559 Roxbury Road (Columbus, 43212), for a suggested donation of $10 plus $2 for shipping.

Membership:
It gives us great sorrow to report that Hank Russell, a long-time member, died at the age of 85 on October 2.  We will have a Mass offered for him.  May he and all of our deceased members rest in peace.
