Winter Luncheon Meeting

Saturday, February 16

Our Winter Luncheon Meeting will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2008.  We will gather at Westminster Thurber Community, 645 Neil Avenue in Columbus, at 11:30 and will be seated for luncheon at 12 noon in the Victorian Room.  Directions: Take Collins Avenue west from Neil Avenue and continue bearing left to the Westminster Thurber gate. Enter at the 'steeple' in in the single-story section.  The luncheon menu will be: salad with choice of dressing, rolls, butter; grilled breast of turkey with bourbon sauce, fruited bread dressing, mixed vegetables, and a choice of pies for dessert; coffee, tea, lemonade.  Cost of the luncheon is $16 per person and reservations are required.  Please send the enclosed form with your check by February 11, to the above address.

The presentation will be “God's House Behind the Walls, The St. Catherine of Siena Chapel at the Ohio State Penitentiary,” by J. Michael Finn.  For 126 years the Diocese of Columbus provided chaplains to the Ohio State Penitentiary.  For 84 of those years the Dominican Fathers from St. Patrick's Church served as chaplains.  Under their control the St. Catherine of Siena Chapel was constructed and maintained behind the walls.  This program will cover the beginnings of the prison chaplain program and highlight the many contributions of the Dominican Fathers, who through acts of bravery and heroism maintained the faith for the men under their charge.

Mike Finn has been a member of the Society and contributor to our Bulletin for many years.  He also is Ohio State Historian for the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
